MAYIBUYE I AFRIKA CHOIR

 

Choir Conductor: Muzi Buthelezi

 

The Choir was formed in July 1991. It is a community choir which comprises of school going youth and adults. It draws membership from the surrounding community of Pietermaritzburg. The purpose of the establishment of the choir is to keep the youth from social ill that is affecting them nowadays.

 

Another aim is to equip them with skills necessary in choral music. The choir performs in many cultural, corporate events, ceremonies and many other social functions.

 

Choir Achievements

The choir has participated in a number of choral festivals and competitions like Imvunge Choral Music Competition, National Choir Festival sponsored by Old Mutual, Arts & Culture, Post Office choral Competition and Melting Pot Choral Festival. In all of the above competition, the choir obtains 1st positions.

 

We have also performed Handel’s Messiah twice. In 1998 the choir performed in Non Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit which was held in Durban ICC. In 2008 the choir crowned, national champions in standard section (NCF). We have invited to sing at municipal events and the Inauguration of our Premier in KZN.

 

We also performed on the Freedom Day celebration held in Durban (Kings Park Stadium) in 2010. The choir has produced a number of successful soloists and conductors.
